Our History
Rolla’s story begins in the early 1800s, when settlers first made their way to the area’s rivers and rolling hills. The first house was built in 1844, but it wasn’t until the arrival of railroad development in the 1850s that Rolla truly began to take shape. In 1858, the town was officially surveyed and named—its name believed to be a nod to “Raleigh,” inspired by the North Carolina roots of early residents, but pronounced and spelled the way locals said it: “Rolla.”
During the Civil War, Rolla became a vital Union stronghold thanks to its position as the end of the Southwest Railroad. The town remained under Union control throughout the war and saw a surge in military presence, with thousands of troops stationed there and local buildings repurposed to support the effort. This strategic significance helped cement Rolla’s role as a transportation and logistical hub.
After the war, Rolla’s growth continued with the founding of the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1870, now known as Missouri University of Science and Technology. Today, Rolla blends its pioneering past with forward-thinking innovation, remaining a vibrant community grounded in history and driven by progress.

Our mission is to support, promote, and advocate for businesses of all sizes while enhancing the overall quality of life in the Rolla area. The Chamber is deeply rooted in community engagement, offering programs that foster local leadership, support education, and attract investment. From organizing signature events like the Freedom Parade and St. Pat’s 5K to promoting tourism through partnerships with VisitRolla and other organizations, we help showcase all that makes Rolla a vibrant and welcoming place to live, work, and visit.
